Empire Music Review: Taylor Gold Label 517e

Description

This Taylor Gold Label 517e is in EXCELLENT overall condition. Cosmetically, it is very clean, only showing some very light play wear. This is a used instrument, so it may have minor finish scratching and minor playwear. Any significant marks will be mentioned in the description. All used models receive a full factory setup and hand-inspection before shipping.

What are “Factory Used” guitars?

These are guitars that we purchase directly from Taylor that are offered to us once or twice a year. They were either used for sales training, promotional use or were sale samples. Since Taylor does not have time to hand inspect each guitar for marks, scratches, blemishes, etc., they offer them to us as “Factory Used”. It should also be mentioned that Taylor Guitars Warranty does not apply to “Factory Used” guitars.

Taylor’s warm-voiced Gold Label Collection grows to feature a powerhouse new Grand Pacific with a deeper body and sound.

Andy Powers has reimagined his Grand Pacific shape with a deeper-bodied design for the Gold Label Collection — it’s 3/8-inch deeper (5-inch body depth at the soundhole). The extra depth gives the guitar extra “lung capacity” and a deeper resonant frequency. This translates into more low-end expansiveness, power and projection. The guitar has more sonic push toward an audience or a microphone, yet with pleasing musical clarity. Even the treble notes have enhanced warmth and depth.

Compared to the Gold Label Super Auditorium, the curves and depth of the Grand Pacific produce even more volume and tonal depth. Its voice is earthy, honest, and uncomplicated like sonic comfort food. A reliable acoustic workhorse both seasoned and soulful.

Fitting into the distinctive design aesthetic of the Gold Label Collection, the guitars feature Andy’s modified headstock shape with an angled back cut and scriptstyle Taylor logo inlay, a different pickguard shape, and a Honduran rosewood Curve Wing bridge.

The 517e's clean, understated appointments reflect its down-to-earth, workhorse spirit. Its torrefied spruce top and mahogany back and sides are paired with a cream binding with simple black/white top purfling and a single-ring rosette in cream and black with black/white purfling. "Crest" inlay motif in cream features simple dot/diamond position markers in the fretboard crowned with a new headstock inlay. Finishing out the features are a mahogany neck with a West African Crelicam Ebony fingerboard, cream pickguard, Indian rosewood bridge pins, Taylor Nickel Tuning machines, and LR Baggs Element VTC electronics.

Exclusive to the Gold Label Collection, Taylor's new neck design combines the tonal benefits of a long-tenon neck joint with easy neck angle micro-adjustability, allowing the string height (action) to be tweaked with unprecedented ease and precision.

The long tenon extends deeper into the guitar body and, together with the heel structure, enhances the wood coupling to produce greater low-end resonance and a sound comparable to traditional neck designs. Like Taylor’s existing neck, the neck joint is glueless, but instead of incorporating tapered shims to calibrate the neck angle, the design is shimless.

Note: After close inspection, this instrument has a finish crack next to the bridge and an impression on the headstock. (See pics, light reflection used to show wear)
